Ingredients:

  • 3 lbs baking apples, peeled, cored, and cubed
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1/3 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp fine sea salt

Instructions:

  1. Peel, core, and dice the apples into uniform 1 inch chunks. Note: Uniform sizes mean they all soften at the same time.
  2. Place the apple chunks, water, and lemon juice into a large heavy bottomed pot.
  3. Cover with a lid and bring to a simmer over medium low heat.
  4. Cook for 15-20 minutes until the apples are tender and easily pierced with a fork.
  5. Stir in the maple syrup, ground cinnamon, and salt.
  6. Let the mixture simmer uncovered for another 2-5 minutes until the liquid reduces and the sauce looks glossy.
  7. Remove the pot from the heat.
  8. Use a potato masher to crush the apples for a rustic style.
  9. Use an immersion blender until the texture is velvety for a smooth finish.
