Ingredients:

  • 2 thick slices sourdough bread
  • 1 tbsp salted butter, softened
  • 3.5 oz shaved deli ham
  • 2 slices sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 tsp dijon mustard
  • 1 pinch garlic powder

Instructions:

  1. Pre-heat the cast iron pie iron over the campfire coals for approximately 2 minutes to season the surface.
  2. Generously coat one side of each bread slice with softened salted butter.
  3. Open the iron and place the first slice of bread inside, butter-side down. Spread dijon mustard on the dry side of the bread.
  4. Layer one slice of cheese onto the bread, followed by the shaved ham ribbons in the center, and top with the second slice of cheese to create a moisture barrier.
  5. Place the second slice of bread on top with the butter-side facing up (towards the iron lid). Sprinkle with a pinch of garlic powder.
  6. Close and latch the iron. Cook over coals for 2-3 minutes per side, checking for a mahogany-colored crust and sizzling edges.
