Ingredients:

  • 2 cups (450g) apple pie filling
  • 1 tsp (2g) ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp (1g) ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp (15g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 package (17.3 oz / 490g) frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 large (50g) egg, beaten
  • 2 tbsp (16g) granulated sugar
  • ½ cup (60g) powdered sugar
  • 1 tbsp (15ml) milk
  • ¼ tsp (1g) vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Place apple pie filling in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the cinnamon, nutmeg, and melted butter. Simmer for 3-5 minutes until the filling thickens and looks jammy. Let it cool slightly.
  2. Roll out the thawed puff pastry and cut it into 8 equal squares. Spoon 2 tablespoons (approx. 30g) of filling into the center of each square.
  3. Brush the edges of the pastry with the beaten egg. Fold the pastry diagonally to create a triangle and press the edges firmly with a fork to create tight indentations.
  4. Place turnovers on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Brush the tops with the remaining egg wash and sprinkle with granulated sugar.
  5. Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 20-25 minutes until the crust is mahogany-colored and feels firm to the touch.
  6. Optional: Mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract to create a glaze and drizzle over the finished turnovers.
